Emilio Jarufe proudly serves as the Director of Choral Activities at Avon Lake High School in
Northeastern, Ohio. The Avon Lake City Schools has a long standing tradition of excellence in
not only Choral Music Education, but also vocal performance. In his 9th year of directing, he has
never been more passionate about bringing the gift of choral music to his students. With his
passion for education he also brings fourteen years of experience in audio engineering within live
sound applications both in contemporary A Cappella as well as various styles of vernacular
music.
In 2015, Emilio received his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Cleveland State
University where he studied with Norki Fujii-Paukert and William G. Zurkey. In 2019, he
obtained his Masters in Music Education from Kent State University where he studied under Dr.
Christopher Venesile. During his masters degree Emilio pursued research centered around
understanding the diminishing numbers of enrolled tenors and basses in choral music
classrooms.
In Avon Lake, the choral program has consistently earned Superior Ratings at the OMEA
District and State Level adjudicated events. Most recently both of the contemporary A Cappella
ensembles from Avon lake High School, “Merples” and “ IMMIX” were selected as Main Stage
performers at the Kettering National A Cappella Festival.
Having spent the last nine years inside the world of Contemporary A Cappella Emilio has had a
wide variety of musical experiences. In 2018-2019, Emilio served as curriculum director for the
International a cappella camp, Camp A Cappella. Now having returned after the pandemic,
Emilio serves as the Music/Technical Director for the camp. Aside from directing his own
groups, Emilio spends time connecting with Contemporary A Cappella directors tackling the
challenging areas of procuring equipment, learning live sound, securing repertoire, and adding
meaningful movement to an A Cappella performance.
In his second year as Director of Music for the United Methodist Church of Macedonia, Emilio
is thrilled to see where this mission will take him. Mr. Jarufe believes that the gift, from god, of
singing, is one to be taken to heart. He has felt continually blessed to work with such a
wonderful group of singers at UCMoM and looks forward to many years to come.
